Hi Team,
This is the last official post for the Spring 2020 Season. This has been a very interesting year for sure and we truly miss seeing your faces on a regular base.
As I mentioned in last week's post we will be conducting the regularly scheduled summer season starting next Tuesday. It will start off as a virtual club but we hope in the next few weeks we will be able to start meeting in small groups. We hope you will consider staying with us and help keep the club together.
Most importantly, we have a big weekend in front of us as some of you will be doing either a virtual half or full marathon. We want to wish you the best of luck as we know training in a group environment compared to the individual approach is a much different experience and we want to give you a virtual high five for sticking with it. We look forward to seeing how everyone does.
If you are not racing this weekend we have an alternative plan for you set up for you this weekend.
If you are thinking about signing up for the summer season this is the time to do it and hope you will consider signing up and keeping the club going. Hope you will join us as it will be an exciting season filled with new runs, hill workouts and a few other surprises I have up my sleeve. (CLICK)
The Plan: This year we are offering a virtual 5k, 10k, and a half marathon training program until the county and state allow groups of 10 or more to meet. Once they allow groups of 10 or more to meet we will have staggered start times. Run Walk Group at 5:30 pm, Intermediate Group at 6:00 pm and PR Chasers at 6:30 pm on Tuesdays, and for Saturday runs the Run Walkers will start at 7:00 am, Intermediate at 7:30 am and PR Chasers at 8:00 am. We will maintain the staggered start until we are able to meet as a group at the traditional 6:15pm on Tuesdays and 7:15 am on Saturdays.
Additionally, we will not be offering team shirts for this season.
Week 19! The last one!!! Remember, we're in a taper, so all runs should be easy and light. You will NOT increase any of your speed, endurance, or power by having strong runs this week. However, you still need to get the same number of days, 3 or 4 this week, to keep your endurance in tune, and body loose. Refer to my earlier “Tapering” email for details. EVERYTHING FROM HERE ON OUT IS EASY!!!
Below are the run maps and the group run locations. At the very bottom of this email are detailed instructions on the meeting locations.
As Always
Please let us know if you have questions.
See ya out there!

Hi Team,
Well this is the final week of the Spring 2020 training season and it has been an interesting one for sure. I want to take a moment and thank everyone for all your support for the club during this interesting time. It has been so awesome and inspiring to see everyone staying on top of their running and not let a little pandemic hold you down.
That brings us to one of the last posts of the season. This week we are taking things nice and easy as many people will be doing a virtual run this weekend and those not racing we have been up in milage for a while so taking an extended recovery week this doesn't sound like a bad thing.
On Tuesday we will be in Balboa Park for some easy mileage (see map) and heading into this weekend we will have some options as if you are doing a virtual half or full there are a lot of options ahead of you. On the other hand if you are wanting you just keep on top of your training we will have a run planned around shelter island.
Either way it's going to be a fun week of running and the official end of the season.
If you are thinking about signing up for the summer season this is the time to do it and hope you will consider signing up and keeping the club going. Hope you will join us as it will be an exciting season filled with new runs, hill workouts and a few other surprises I have up my sleeve. (CLICK)

Hi Everyone,
I hope everyone is doing well, staying safe, and not going completely insane over this lockdown. The good news is you have a heavy dose of miles prescribed for this weekend and exactly what the doctor ordered.
We have another classic run taking off from Crown Point and heading to La Jolla. Remember that although we have identified the location of the run some location might require you to run on the street or 1 block instead of on the beach boardwalk. On this week's run in La Jolla, it shouldn't be too bad once we get to law street as much of it is tucked into the neighborhood.
Have a great run everyone.
We are in Week 15, so plan your runs based on the training schedules. Continuing from last week, we’re still UP this week. Everyone’s weekly mileage should be overall higher for the entire week.
Below are the run maps and the group run locations. At the very bottom of this email are detailed instructions on the meeting locations.
Starting at almost the end of the Mission Bay Boardwalk at De Anza Cove, run South on the busy and popular concrete pathway on an Out & Back Run.
Starting at the end of Mission Beach (South Mission Jetty), run North along the coast all the way into La Jolla until your halfway point. Turnaround and run home :)
Please let us know if you have questions.

Are you ready for this weekend's run?
This is an interesting week as you have options. If you are sticking with the full marathon training you have the longest run of the season this weekend. As I have mentioned in the videos you should only do the longest run if you are doing a virtual half. The rest of us will move into a maintenance mode and have is do between 11 and 18 miles. Pick wisely, my friends.
Have a great run and see you soon.
We are in Week 16, so plan your runs based on the training schedules. We are on way to our LONGEST run in just under 2 weeks already so we’re on the way back up. Notables for each group are:
Upcoming Group Runs & Clinics
Below are the run maps and the group run locations. At the very bottom of this email are detailed instructions on the meeting locations.
As you have heard in the last few videos the Rock N Roll Marathon has been postponed and a new date has not been set so we are recommending that we keep your stamina up and run between 12 to 18 miles until we know the new date.
If you are running a virtual full marathon in the comming weeks you have one big run this weekend. And it's fairly simple. . . It’s just a big-ass, long run! It covers Crown Point, Ocean Beach, Pt. Loma, Downtown, Old Town and Mission Bay and it based on an old San Diego favorite “Tour of San Diego” - named for obvious reasons. The transition from Ocean Beach to Pt. Loma is up and over a road called “Hill Street” :) The extended 22.5 mi option goes further into downtown, then UP A St andUP into Balboa Park for additional mileage and hills.

Good Morning! I hope everyone had a great week and are excited about the train run this weekend. Make sure you watch the video and look over all the information before the run.
This weekend we have the long-awaited train run, this is always a favorite.
The trains depart at the following times; 6:33am, 8:44am, 12:43pm, 2:16pm, 4:36pm and 7:22pm.
The full set of details for the train run can be found at this Link but below is the high-level information you need for this weekend.
If you are doing the train run this weekend you will be doing a minimum of 16 miles. If you are doing less than that, it will be an out and back from the Solana Beach train station.
Do I Really Have to Run 16mi This Weekend?
We have the Train Run this weekend which is a one-way, 16 mi run meaning there is no cutting short. YES, We WILL have an alternate Coastal Run going up to 12-14mi for those not able or wanting to do 16 yet. **DO NOT RISK going out trying to do 16mi just because it sounds cool or challenging. I will have more info later in the week on the details.
In addition to adding a bit of mileage to our Mon and Wed runs for most everyone, our Thursday runs bump up more mileage to cover what we call “Medium Long Run” (MLR) distance.
As mentioned above, we’re back UP this week. Everyone’s weekly mileage is bumping up a bit starting this week. This includes the R/W Interval Group bumping up to the next set of intervals at 2/8 or 2/13. Notables for each group are:
These guidelines are for those of us NOT doing the LJHM this weekend.
Upcoming Group Runs & Clinics
Below are the run maps and the group run locations. At the very bottom of this post are detailed instructions on the meeting locations.
This run is real easy and needs little description . . . Ride the train from Solana Beach to Oceanside, run back. There is the main run + a few different variations for those who need to add-on.
o Add-on, Up North (Get it done first): http://bit.ly/QULclU

Happy Week 15. Our mileage is up but we are going to stay at a high of 16-18 miles as the new date for Rock N Roll has not been announced yet.
I know this year was a little funky doing a big race like La Jolla Half virtually but we want to send a BIG congratulations to everyone that did the race this weekend. I guess our hill training made an impact. :) Congratulations to everyone, and we can't wait to see your pics on social media. use #BlackFlagRunningClub on your posts.

]]>This year La Jolla Half Marathon is going to be interesting as it is going to be a virtual race. Below are two route options you can use for your virtual race.
________________________________________
Hi everyone!!!!
We have a busy weekend with a long run on Saturday, some of us doing the virtual La Jolla and we are going to try something that will look like a social event.
Look over all the details in this post and watch the video because there is a lot of info. Have a great run this weekend and maybe we will see you on Sunday.
Are you over being locked down in your house? Well, now you're invited to Coach Aaron's Drive-By Birthday Parade!
On Sunday 4/26/20 from 6:00pm to 6:15pm I will be standing on the corner of G St and Columbia St (655 Columbia St San Diego) and I want to see your face on my birthday parade. This is a social distancing approved event. Decorate your car, honk, make some noise but please stay in your car. The parade is only 15 min long so just make a few loops around the block and say hi.
I hope you will get out of the house and say hi.
This year La Jolla Half Marathon is going to be interesting as it is going to be a virtual race. Below are two route options you can use for your virtual race.
Many of us are running LJ Half, many are not. If this is your goal race, then this is the big final push and Taper. If you are continuing on to the RnR race AND running LJ Half, you have a choice if you want to push hard or not. If you are NOT running the race, but continuing onto the RnR, then you have a slightly different path:
Remember, running very hard (hard training runs or racing) – is very stressful to the body so you HAVE to actively plan your schedules around the types of running you’re doing.
As I mentioned above, we are in a Taper week for La Jolla Half. In regards to training, we are resting up for race day. As for the RnR group, we are 6 weeks away from the big race and we are in our last cycle of building up mileage....this means that for the Full Marathoners you will see you Thursday and Saturday runs are creeping up. Some notable items for each group:
Below are the run maps and the group run locations. At the very bottom of this post are detailed instructions on the meeting locations.
From Crown Point, head North around Sail Bay to the ocean and head North into La Jolla along the beautiful “bike path” and neighborhood of La Jolla. It’s an Out & Back, so turn around where your schedules tells you, but you can easily get all the way to the Cove for a 15mi run, or the Shores, and further if you wish.
As Always
Please let us know if you have questions.

Hello Runners and Happy Week 14!! Man, it’s going by fast! We finished an AWESOME 13th week with a recovery week and now we are back up in milage and some of us are doing La Jolla Half this weekend.
Congrats everyone for making it this far!! Now the fun begins>>>>>>
We are going to try a virtual happy hour this Tues and try playing a game at the same time so this is how it's going to work.
On Tuesday 4/21/20 at 7:30pm you will follow the steps below:
Step 1 : Log in to Zoom using the link below. Best to do this using a computer or laptop

See ya out there!

Hi Team,
We are heading out to Coronado this weekend and running most of Silver Strand. This run will be between 8 and 18 miles this weekend depending on what your training for but if you are dong La Jolla as a virtual run next week we are recommending that you stay at 8 miles.
See the links for the map and know that you can not park in the actual park itself but you can park just outside of the park on 3rd street and run out to the pathway around the water.
Have a great run this weekend.
Yes, for all of you!!!! And after 3 weeks straight of hill training, plus a few rough long runs . . . IT’S TIME FOR SOME RECOVERY!!
As I mentioned above, we are in a recovery week. In regards to training, means that your overall weekly mileage will be less and we will not be doing any specialty runs or workouts. It is designed to give your body and mind a rest we have been pounding the pavement pretty hard recently. Some notable items for each group:
Below are the run maps and the group run locations. At the very bottom of this post are detailed instructions for the meeting locations.
Starting at Tidelands Park in Coronado, run the popular pathway clockwise till you get to the Hotel Del then verge off the usual path to head out South down the Silver Strand. Hit your half way point? Turnaround and come home. (Mapped up to 11mi one way, 22mi round trip)
Please let us know if you have questions.
See ya out there!

Coronado, Tidelands Park
2099 Mullinex Dr, Coronado, CA 92118
Coming from San Diego over Coronado Bridge, stay in far right lane, exit Glorietta Blvd, right onto Mullinex into park, all the way to end. We're in the far East end of the park, along the water's edge, towards the bridge. There are restrooms and water fountains.
*This is a great run, but a busy area and limited parking. Tidelands park can be a madhouse on Saturday mornings as there are ball fields out there and the Saturday morning soccer moms can be out in force. If you’re not “early”, plan to park out on Mullinex Rd, or possibly even further – meaning you could be faced with a good hike, so try to get there earlier than normal.

Hi Team,
Awesome job last week as we finished our last hill workout before La Jolla and for many of us the longest run of the season. The good news is this week we are in a recovery/tapper mode where we will take out milage down a little and give our bodies the opportunity to rest up a little.
We have a new run set for this Tuesday at Trolley Barn Park and we will confirm the run location for Saturday once we have confirmed the path is open. More on that in Friday's post.

You guys are doing amazing as we head into the last week of big hill workouts. We are back at Morley Field this week as we hammer out a total of 8 hill repeats after our regular scheduled runs.
Thank you, everyone, for being so accommodating this week we had some road closures this weekend out at Mission Trails. Some of the info we get off of the websites are not always accurate snd we have to make adjustments on the fly.
These big hills are really going to pay off for those of use running La Jolla Half. This is the last big week of hills before we taper for La Jolla. Keep up the hard work.
We are going to try a virtual happy hour this Tues and try playing a game at the same time so this is how it's going to work.

During the first few weeks of training, everyone was super-duper excited to be training – with many asking me when we’re going to do “real workouts” like hills and sprints and strength and all of that other stuff that too many runners think way too highly of. Frankly, those are some of the least important tools in your long distance training big picture bag. Almost half of us are no longer training.
But, if you’re still with us, you’ve learned what the tools are – long, slow, easy runs with a lot of time on your feet, mentally tackling each workout with ease!!! But, now I’m sensing that the question is “are we done with hills yet”? Well, only a week left, and then the downhill taper into LJ Half Marathon, then shifting gears a bit. So, let’s kick the crap out of the run tomorrow, add in two more hill option this Saturday (again, optional but YES, you should do it and kick it’s ass too!) and then blast into the last phase of training!!

How is everyone doing? I hope you're not losing your mind like I am. LOL
This Saturday we are at Mission Trails but don't worry we are not going onto the trails because they are closed but we are going to run on the street through the park. This is going to be a big run with some big hills but I think you are ready,
Have a great run this week and we will see you on Monday morning with a new video.
Interval Groups = Split-Off Half vs. Full
Starting in Week 11 (Phase 3) the Beginner / Interval half vs full marathoners finally split off from each other in overall weekly minutes, primarily in the Saturday long runs. The half marathoners will continue a very gradual increase and level-off, while the full marathoners will continue on a more rapid increase. For instance, in 2 weeks, the half marathoners will do 110min while the full marathoners will do 130min. Similarly, mid-week runs differ by 10min each. NOTE: The intervals remain the same for both A and B groups.

]]>Hi Team,
Thank you everyone for all your help and support as we figure out how to navigate these intertseting times.
These virtual runs are not ideal but as we start to build them out I am feeling better and better about how the content is coming together. I want your feedback on these so if you have ideas of other information your want us to cover or other elements we can include please let me know. It will make all of this much better.
Hope you enjoyed the hill workout on Tuesday, we have 2 more weeks of Florida Canyon ahead of us and Torrey Pines this weekend.
I am happy to announce we have generated 2 new videos for both the warm-up and cool down that you can follow along with at home. Check them out.
I don't know who has access to a treadmill but wanted to create some additional training materials for those that do. Using the treadmill is a great way to build overall speed as part of your training. We don't want to only use the treadmill but it is good to supplement your training. Over the next few weeks, we will be creating treadmill workouts you can follow at home. Click HERE for this weeks workout. Print it, take it with you and put it on the front of your treadmill to review while you run.
Since we’re in it full swing, I’ve got a great article/reference email being tidied up and sent to you in just a bit. It discusses everything “hills”. We have another good week of Hill Training, including our “Torrey Pines Pleasure Seeker” this weekend. Bring on La Jolla!
Starting in Week 10 (Phase 3) the Beginner / Interval half vs full marathoners finally split off from each other in overall weekly minutes, primarily in the Saturday long runs. The half marathoners will continue a very gradual increase and level-off, while the full marathoners will continue on a more rapid increase. For instance, in 2 weeks, the half marathoners will do 120min (2hrs) while the full marathoners will do 150 (2.5hrs). Similarly, mid-week runs differ by 10min each. NOTE: The intervals remain the same for both A and B groups.
We are in Week 10, so plan your runs based on the training schedules. As I mentioned above, we are in a recovery week.In regards to training, means that your overall weekly mileage will be less and we will not be doing any specialty runs or workouts. It is designed to give your body and mind a rest we have been pounding the pavement pretty hard recently. I will be sending out a separate email with the subject "rest and recovery" which reviews this very subject in detail. Some notable items for each group:
Below are the run maps and the group run locations. At the very bottom of this post are detailed instructions on the meeting locations.
We will arrive 15-20 minutes before each group run to make ourselves available for questions, tips, etc.. We also plan to stay afterward for as long as it takes to do the same. This means I'll be at Tuesday runs by 6 PM and the Saturday runs by 7 AM.
As always, please let us know if you have questions.

Hi Team,
For the time being, we are moving forward with a remote option of the club. This is not my ideal situation but we will give it a try and lets all hope this thing passes quickly and we can get back to normal.
Until then we are going to keep following the same training schedule and repair for the upcoming races even if they are virtual races. Watch the video for the info for this week's run.

]]>Hi Team,
I want to start by thanking everyone for their support and understanding during this interesting time as we all try and figure out how to manage the reality of the sistiation.
As a club, there are some obvious direct impacts on our day to day activities but I think we have a plan to keep things going in the right direction. We will still be sending out texts on both Mondays and Fridays coaching you along on the upcoming runs. We are also going to keep training for the big races even if they are canceled. If the race its self doesn't have a virtual option we will host one in its place. So with that, we need to keep training.
keep an eye out for our video to help you stay on track. We are open for feedback and recommendations so if you have any feedback please let us know.
We are in Week 9, so plan your runs based on the training schedules.Overall, solid, steady state runs are on schedule and this is the last BIG push of this training cycle before a recovery week. Some notable items for each group:
Below are the run maps and the group run locations. At the very bottom of this email are detailed instructions on the meeting locations.

*NOTE – between 11/1 and 3/31 the restroom at this parking lot is closed for the winter –They should be open by now. There is a restroom at the other end of the Park just under a 1/4 mile away (you can easily walk/jog from our lot) and there is also a restroom at Fanuel Park which is about 1 mile into the run. Keep this in mind if you find yourself having to go to the restroom as you near the parking area before the run.
]]>We are in recovery mode this week which means all the runs drop their level of intensity and we are doing easy milage. Remember recovery periods are just as important as the long runs. Follow your training plan and you will be on a plan for success.
Over the weekend the state-imposed new recommendations related to social distancing and have asked that all bars and restaurants close and to suspend the meeting of all groups with 50 or more people. In an effort to adjust to these new guidelines the Black Flag Running Club will make the following adjustments.
Wow, what an interesting weekend and virtual run expense. It was great to see everyone out there and have the opportunity to connect with some other run clubs. Everyone did amazing and can’t wait to hear how everyone did!
I want to start off by saying there is currently no major health risks in San Diego County as it relates to the coronavirus. I might be overly cautious here but with everything in the news, Black Flag Running Club will be imposing the following action to ensure we can keep everyone running and healthy.
I am sure all of this is a little over the top but think it’s best to be proactive. Thank you, everyone, for your support and understanding

Crown Point Shores Park (Southern Lot)
3550 Crown Point Drive, San Diego, CA 92109 - (Address is not exact)
We'll meet at the Southern end of the most Southern parking lot in the grass area along the edge of the lot, closest to Ingram Street bridge. Plenty of parking lot parking. There is a set of restrooms and water fountains in this end too.
